ISLAMABAD – Executive editor of Daily Pakistan, and political analyst Usman Shami, questioned the Afghan government’s growing closeness with India, saying Kabul needs to reconsider ties amid India’s continued supression of Muslims at home. As Tensions between Islamabad and Kabul intensified and peaked at cross-border attacks and diplomatic friction, Shami said Afghan Taliban’s growing engagement with India could further complicate fragile relationship between the two neighbors. Speaking on program Think Tank, he said Afghanistan must “reconsider its alignment” and ponder whether it is serving India’s strategic interests. “Does the Afghan government not see how the Indian government treats Muslims in…

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission that visited Pakistan from Sept 24 to Oct 8, under the 37-month Extended Fund Facility and the 28-month Resilience and Sustainability Facility, acknowledged “significant progress” toward a staff-level agreement but stopped short of concluding one. This delay matters. Without a final agreement, disbursements remain stalled, holding back around $1.25 billion in critical inflows. Pakistan’s balance of payments remains precariously dependent on timely IMF tranches, donor releases, and friendly-country deposits. The World Bank’s recent analysis paints a starker picture: poverty reduction has not just stalled — it has reversed. In its September 2025 report, the…

TENSIONS that had been brewing for some time between Pakistan and Afghanistan exploded into open conflict when the Afghan Taliban regime launched attacks against this country late on Saturday, and Pakistan responded by repulsing the aggression. A DEMOCRACY activist wins the Nobel Peace Prize and the president of one of the world’s most powerful democracies begrudges her the honour. The best author would struggle to coin such a neat ending for the story of the demise of democracy. The prize, after all, implies how exceptional the fight for democratic norms has become in this century. Such a bleak reading of María Corina Machado’s victory may seem counter-intuitive given the flurry in recent months of protest activity around the world. According to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’s Global Protest Tracker, there have been more than 142…

A WAR of words broke out last week between India and Pakistan triggered by New Delhi’s belligerent statements. Threats and bellicose statements by Indian officials have continued sporadically after the four-day conflict between India and Pakistan in May. But the spate of recent utterances by India’s political and military leaders struck a more ominous note and has made the already fraught environment more tense. Last week, three provocative statements from Indian officials raised the temperature between the two countries. The most egregious remarks were by the Indian army chief Upendra Dwivedi, who said Pakistan will face erasure from the world…
